I agree with Brian. You may be able to get "everything" from one store but the fresh things are not as good as ou would get from an independent shop. Sadly though, everything is price driven and the big stores generally don't give a to$$ about the local traders. Well to let the small traders there survive it's going to a battle of compromising your shopping buy the stuff you want from Morrisons after you've been done Front street and got the things you need it'll take a few more minutes but you can use the Morrisons parking lot that way or whinge that no one uses the local shops and be a hypocrit.

Acomb is in danger of becoming another clone high street. The independents are all but gone. There is Fletchers, One greengrocers, Acorn Meats, Scoop, Steves Shoes, Acomb Music, Barnitts, 3 Cafes, numerous hair and nail places, We R Cards, Herbert Todds, and I think that is it.

In the ten years I have been trading in Acomb we have lost two greengrocers, a butchers, a proper bakers, and a toy shop. Charity shops, opticians, estate agents, and smaller chain stores have moved in.

If shoppers truely want choice, then they have got to demand it. They have also got to use the local stores, and not moan when they go out of business due to lack of use and spiralling costs.

As to Morrisons expanding, I find it expensive, and it seems to be full of processed food. Not impressed.

The Acomb traders should be opposing this, as it could have quiet a big effect on their future as the bigger morrisons stores have diy ranges/hardware /clothing/toys/garde

The WMC insist that they own a part of the car park, Morrisons claim they own it, and others say it was gited to the community some decades ago.

Thanks pacman. This will need sorting before any development is allowed. If it turns out it does belong to Morrisons and they do get permission to enlarge the store (and thus attract more customers) then they could restrict the parking to their customers only. Without the free public parking space all the shops in Acomb are likely to suffer.

I have just spoken to the planning officer. There are no plans to reduce the number of parking spaces. The footprint of the store will hardly change. It is to go up, rather than out.

The planning notice has gone up today, so we have 21 days to get any comments and objections into 9 St Leonards Place.

On the plus side, if more people are coming into Acomb, it could mean more customers for all of us (if we survive)

I find the part of the story concerning LibDems promises in 2003 interesting... "Lib Dems were elected on a platform of change - promising to clean up the city's streets; step up anti-crime partnerships; upgrade the northern ring-road; and work towards' installing rail stations at Haxby and Strensall, and later York Hospital, York Business Park, Copmanthorpe and Askham Bar."

Upgrade the northern ring road - never happened. Rail stations all over the place? Do these people have any idea of the costs of such installations? They must be either totally insane or criminally under qualified for such a position if they have even the slightest hope that such a thing is possible. I would opt for the latter short coming.

And finally.... is it not time for an end to PARTY POLITICS? It doesn't benefit the people, the parties just argue amongst themselves often just out of the principle of what their party is supposed to believe. They have no real power, (unless you call Coun Galloway ORDERING council officers to doctor reports to support his desires (I know, I used to work in council)) or desire to do the right thing, after all its just a job.

What is the point of having a Conservative councillor in your ward, with a LibDem council and a Labour MP? They're not exactly gonna bend over each other to please YOU are they?

How about a HUMAN councillor, with a SHARED POWER council and a COALITION government? Or better still, sack most of them and put some intelligent economists in charge.
