Motorcyclists around York, Selby and the rest of North Yorkshire have been praised by police for their behaviour.

With the sun shining bikers have been out on the region's roads in force this week and police say the vast majority were riding sensibly and within the speed limits.

Last Wednesday saw about 2,500 bikers attend the famous Squire's Café Bar, in Sherburn-in-Elmet, but police said that despite the numbers, most people were riding within the law and no accidents were reported.

The previous Bank Holiday Monday, 200 bikers gathered in Hawes, in the Yorkshire Dales, but again there were very few problems.

Inspector Chris Charlton, head of road policing at North Yorkshire Police, said the initial start biking weather has proved promising.

He said: "While this year's biking season has only just got under way, it is very encouraging to see that riders are taking notice of our safety messages and riding in a sensible and careful manner while still enjoying their riding experience. This is something that we encourage and applaud.

"Two-and-a-half thousand motorcyclists coming together in one place at one time significantly increases the risk of collisions and injuries amongst this very vulnerable road user group.

"I am really happy to report that no incidents were reported during the evening. This suggests that the message is getting through that North Yorkshire Police will not tolerate irresponsible and illegal riders, but we do want to welcome those that ride sensibly, safely and responsibly.

"We want riders to enjoy our county, not become another casualty statistic."

More operations were carried out this week under Operation Anvil, the force's current road safety campaign supported by the 95 Alive Road Safety Partnership.

Although most operations took place in the very north of the county, officers deployed to the A1 were supported by colleagues patrolling the A19 and A64.

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service also supported the operation and deployed its community safety vehicles and fire appliances at service areas along the A1 corridor at Tadcaster, Rainton and Leeming Bar.

Not to mention the four idiots on phallus extensions who decided that the double white lines on Saltergate bank didn't apply to them and almost got totalled by a bus coming the other way for their trouble ...

Note to the plod: if your coffers are getting low and you're in the mood for a crackdown, I'd suggest the following spots as good revenue earners:

- The Selby by-pass
- The B1223 between Sherburn and Cawood (or the road between Squires and the Aberford interchange)
- The A169 at Saltergate
- The B1257 at the bottom of Newgate Bank

I've got nothing against people riding their bikes, especially when the weather is as good as it has been, but if they ride in a way which endangers themselves and others then they deserve everything they've got coming to them.

A friend of mine watch a biker nearly die on the A170 last week near Sutton bank. There was a group of them all riding between 90-100 MPH. Unfortunately they didnÂ’t realise that the solid white lines were there for a reason, and the back marker hit a truck head on while he was on the wrong side of the road. Although I donÂ’t mind the bikers doing this to themselves, apparently the guy who was driving the truck was really distressed. Probably unable to work for a while. The police should close these roads to bikers who treat them little more than a racetrack.

The main problem is, most of the riders haven't ridden their bikes since last summer. They need to spend a month or so getting used to the machine, and the changed road conditions.

The main problem is that most of the riders are inconsiderate thrill-seeking cretins.

I've yet to see a sensible biker!
Four idiots yesterday on the road between the A166 and Malton overtaking and squeezing between our car and the cars coming the other way. This is a bendy road with tons of blind corners and they weren't taking care at all. A little further on and a car flashed us to warn of danger ahead and we went around the corner to find one of the bikers in the field! Thankfully the stupid idiot didn't seem hurt. I hope his bike was totalled!

Do away with ya.

Let's not forget the main issue to bikers is car drivers. The reason they overtake as they do is because from their view it is safe to do so, they are smaller and faster than cars, I ride and drive so know what I'm talking about. Admittedly there are a minority that take it too far and beg for all that comes but 99% are normal people you would see in the street on a daily basis. Just because they/we enjoy cruising round country roads DRIVING TO THE CONDITIONS, sometimes that may not be the limit of the road but when no one is hurt is it really so bad?

You can hope bad things all you want, nothing is worse to your average biker than getting hurt, bikes are replaceable
same as cars. Often made out to be naughty outlaw types and that isn't the case.

Thats wierd as i seem to see quite a few sensible bikers, perhaps its you not paying enough attention when your on the roads! And no, i'm not a biker, i just don't jump to the conclusion that every single one of them is an idiot. There are as many stupid drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, as there are stupid bikers.

All the bikers i encountered over the weekend seemed sensible enough to me and all gave a curteous thankyou wave if i moved over a little to let them through!!!

Motorcycles don't play "follow-my-leader" very well. The power-to-weight ration is such that you have to constantly keep "tweaking" your accelerator to maintain the line. Also, the power of modern bikes is vast and therefore the biker just wants to free himself of the queue and be on his way.

On the A19 to Selby yesterday 3 bikers waved to thank me as I always pull as far over as I can to let them through (when safe). The one that 'wheelied' past me on the Selby bypass (I was doing 60) was just a mental case!

Well you must be on of those drivers that just doesn't see motorcycles... Fair enough there are some bikers that ride dangerously (just like alot of car drivers) I quite often see that most car drivers do not read the road correctly, riding a bike has taught me one thing. Most People that drive switch off after a couple of minutes and barely pay attention to what they are actually doing.

As a young 19 year old motorcyclist i am classed as less risk than if i drove a car!

Why have you jumped to conclusions about every motorcyclist. Do you have some form of issue with us? Maybe you should consider your own ability as a driver before insulting others and putting a stigma on the majority of bikes that are sensible!

I take it from some of the comments there are individuals that think all other road users, expect bikers are perfect!

I wish that was the case. Everyone notices the biker that does something wrong and **** like mad but they are not the only idiots on the road. From a motorcyclistÂ’s point of view, I apologise for the minority of bikers that give us a bad name. However, there is nothing worse than being on a road where other road users are travelling at half the speed limit because they are either sight seeing, on the mobile phone, screaming at the kids that are not wearing seat belts, eating, drinking, having oral sex, a domestic etc.

Sometimes because they are not focused on their driving and observing what is going on around (i.e. reading the road properly, planning what they should be doing to make progress, using their mirrors and shoulder checks for the blind spots etc.) then the bike coming up behind them can catch them unawares.

I have had other vehicles right on my back wheel trying to push me along when I am sticking to the speed limit in a built up area and they think I should be going quicker. I would have thought the hi-vis with the training groups name on it would be a big enough clue that the rider in front of me is undergoing training and will obey the speed limit. I have had cars pull out in front of me because they havenÂ’t looked properly, or they have looked properly and just donÂ’t care about the other road user coming towards them. They have started to race the bike when I have moved out to overtake them, swerving towards my bike as I am passing them. I could go on and on.

I would suggest before people start criticising bikers in general for their riding they should look at the standard of other road users as well. The standard of driving in this country has declined over recent years and courtesy has no meaning for some.

What I have described refers to the minority of other road users. The majority are good and see the bike behind or the one coming towards them in good time and even pull over to the side to allow the biker to pass safely. To these road users, I would like to say thank you for the courtesy you have shown me and my fellow bikers. IÂ’m the good looking one who waves as you allow him to pass.

All you have done is berate bikers on here all day. I see you have had a couple of the comments removed. How sad that the best thing you can do is come onto the forums of a local newspaper and partake in generalising the motorcycle community with pathetic name calling. Why not head down to Squires on Wednesday evening and make your feelings known then if you really are this passionate about your hatred of a hobby which thousands of us enjoy responsibly and safely. Just because a small minority behave idiotically doesn't mean we are all lunatics.

yet again people jump on the bandwagon. rash comments about a subject the majority of non-riders know very little about. the majority of riders will stick to limits, be respectful and stay out of trouble, therefore not getting noticed, whereas the few who decide to get overexcited are the people we should all be judged against. i saw a white van cut up another car this morning- does that mean all white van drivers are bad drivers?
a post out to be a positive outlook on reduced accident figures, which i'm sure we all appreciate, reduced to telling tales on the bad biker who overtook me a bit too quick!
grow up and stop with your rash generalisation

Wanger. Right now, after reading the posts you have left today, I can imagine far more than the above. The fact is that you are a very sad and bitter little thing. Oh and I very much doubt that you have the balls to go near a bike so Darwinism is no issue there. Tw&t.

A good letter -well done.

If you ride a motorbike, I guarantee you are a far better car driver. You, if you are on a bike and the worse happens, you are always the loser.

Like Redski, a big thank-you to all those car-drivers that move over, realising they have to play follow-the-leader, and allow me on my way. Good on yer!

As there are obviously a number of bikers (good and bad I would assume) commenting in this string perhaps you may be able to answer this question for me - why is it that SOME bikers seem to think that car drivers should move as far over to the side of the road as they can, drive in the hedge back and risk getting punctures or worse just so they can squeeze through between them and oncoming traffic without having to cross the white line? If it isn't clear to overtake correctly and move out to the otherside of the road to pass then surely that is not a safe manouver and they are riding dangerously. I would also like to hear from those bikers (and cyclists) who like to squeeze through two rows of stationary traffic without any regard for whose wing mirrors they are hitting on the way.

Allsorts, York says...
9:12am Tue 13 May 08

I don't care if you are in a car, on a motorbike or running 'Flintstone style', just stick to the rules of the road, think of others and stay within the speed limit and things would overall be hunky dory!

ratboy, north yorks says...
7:54pm Tue 13 May 08

most bikers dont expect you to move over but do appreciate it if you do. the road positioning is a vital part of training and so what you might percieve as a position in the road where they are attempting to force you to pull over may infact just be defensive riding, in which they are not only making you aware of their presence but attempting to make themselves visible to people pulling from junctions etc ahead. the key to survival on a bike is to be seen so this is understandable!
with regards to "squeezing between cars" it is entirely legal to filter between stationary traffic. i do understand that some over excited riders may take this too far and filter when there isnt really enough space to do so.

Steve., York says...
8:00pm Tue 13 May 08

Wanger, you seem to have some ill thought point to prove so i'll not argue, but you do across as a totally inconsiderate muppet.

I would say some bikes dont cross the line to be able to say they're filtering because as far as im aware overtaking means using the other side of road.

As far as im concerned if you have a pent up view about a certain type of traffic as wanger does, you shouldn't be on the road - it leaves you more inclined to become involved(if not create) a nasty ending road rage incident.
