This past term, some of the Y10 and Y12 girls from the Mount School York traveled to Bath to participate in the Bath International School Model United Nations event hosted at Kingswood School.

It was an educational and inspirational trip for all, the girls learned to speak up while giving Points of Information and to think on behalf of a country of which until a few months ago they had no clear understanding.

The girls prepared tirelessly in the weeks leading up to the event and were ready to share their ideas on resolving world dilemmas. They now had a full understanding of their countries’ standing on political, economic and environmental issues, which helped them bring forth plans to help achieve their country’s aims in the conference.

Many great ideas were presented, discussed, and perfected, with the collective collaboration of the entire council. In the Political Council alone, 4 out of the 5 resolutions presented were passed, which showed great collaboration skills between the delegates. Our girls gave speeches, inquired about other people’s resolutions, and made sure to vote according to their country’s beliefs.

The girl’s debating skills were challenged, along with their ability to face an audience that was ready to disagree with them. It was not an easy task to have to face, and yet the girls showed great fortitude when faced with the many inquiries made by other delegates.

Throughout the event, the discussions were kept respectful and orderly, although they were fierce and full of valuable counterarguments.

Many other schools participated, and the girls were able to make connections with pupils from around England, pupils who they will likely encounter again in other upcoming events in the following terms.

Overall, it was a great way for the girls to see firsthand how our countries maintain world peace, and how difficult it is at the same time.
