SHE was the pride of York when she glided down the catwalk in the glamorous Miss England pageant – but just 24 hours later she was the victim of a terrifying assault in her home city.

Beauty queen Helen Jackson had gone to The Gallery night club in York on Saturday evening to celebrate her dazzling performance in London as Miss York.

But her night-out with friends came to a shocking end at about 1am on Sunday when a club-goer tried to strangle her on the dance floor before her boyfriend was smacked over the head with a bottle.

The 19-year-old, of Claxton, said she could not believe what had happened – but was even more astonished when the club’s bouncers threw her boyfriend, Henry Richardson, out of the club.

She said that even when Henry, 23, had reported the assault to police officers outside The Gallery, they did not take down the details and merely told him to get a taxi home.

Today, after The Press contacted North Yorkshire Police, the city’s senior police officer, Chief Superintendent Iain Spittal, stepped in and asked for Helen’s phone number to apologise in person.

A full police investigation into the incident has now been launched.

Helen, who is a law student at the University of Newcastle, said: “It was terrifying. Basically, somebody tried to strangle me on the dance floor.

“I don’t know who he was or if he knew who I was, but he reached out and grabbed hold of my cheeks with one hand and put the other right round my neck.

“I tried to move his hands, but he wouldn’t let go and it was really hurting.

“As soon as Henry saw him, he came over and removed the guy’s hands from me. He’s 6ft 2ins and towered over the guy, but he would never get into any trouble because he’s a trainee solicitor and that would be it for him.”

Helen said she was extremely shaken up, but was determined not to let the incident ruin the evening.

She said: “I was so shocked and really quite scared, but I was with a group of friends and didn’t want to spoil the night, so we carried on dancing. A bit later, I saw a gang of about seven lads walking down towards us. I was shouting at Henry to turn around, but it was too late and one of them smacked him on the back of his head with a bottle.

“They cut his head and he fell to his knees.

“He plays rugby and he’s a big guy – I never thought anybody could do that to him. The next thing I knew the bouncer had got hold of Henry and thrown him out – I couldn’t believe it.

“I was shocked and terrified and the worst bit was almost being accused of it being our fault.”

Helen said she was relieved the police had now launched an investigation into the incident.

She said: “I received a call from the police today and the person I spoke to was really helpful and apologetic.

“He apologised for the police not doing anything on the night and asked if we wanted to lodge an official complaint.”

Don't forget boys and girls...crime is going down: Boyfriend tried to tell the Fuzz he'd been assaulted and he was told to get a taxi home?!

Of course crime figures are going down...

A lot of emotive words - strangling? Like the person was attempting to render somebody lifeless? Or somebody play fighting as on the school playground? As in a headlock? While neither is right there is a big difference and I know which one I'd bet on.

All night-clubs remove people that are physically interacting because that is standard practise. Who did what or why cannot be dealt with in the middle of a dance floor.

Night club justice is often rough justice - so stay away if you can't live with it.

The Gallery, seems to think it is above the law.
I have heard of young people being accused of not giving the wrong money to a certain person on the till, ie hand over £10 note and be told they had handed over £5, and this has happened more than once.
When query was made they were ignored. This was a few months ago now.

The thing with that is, from the way the story reads, ONLY the victim was thrown out, while the attackers were allowed to remain inside.

Even once it was established that the vicitm, was indeed the victim, no action was taken to find the attackers. Most likely they were mates of the doormen.

Good training for Helen and Henry, they will soon be making careers / money out of defending scallies like the alleged attackers in a few years time

I was assualted by a 'doorman' in the Gallery 6 years ago, informed the police outside of what had happened, was told to go home. I said once more, I was assaulted, are you just going to sit on your **** doing **** all and I was arrested. I failed to take a caution, called witnesses to the following court case and the case was laughed out of court with the magistrate stating they couldnt believe the arresting officer had acted in this way - lesson is - we dont need more police on the streets, we just need the ones we've got to do their job properly!

So the supposedly intelligent "Miss York" decided to go to The Gallery for a night out.

Gallery+Intelligence = Oxymoron

For goodness sake - yes, its a disgraceful incident, but what do you expect when you enter Darwins Waiting Room...Moet and Canapes !!!

Little chance of that in York, and it's also the case that most of New Labour's knee jerk legislation to deal with problems has been totally unnecessary. The police don't enforce the new laws any more than they did the old ones.

Pity the reporter didn't take the opportunity to grill Chief Superintendent Iain Spittal on progress to identify which of his officers was drinking coffee whilst driving.

Even if he or she did I get a strong sense of swept under the carpet syndrome incoming!

Truth is the Gallery doormen are a law unto themselves. They are employed by one of Yorks biggest drug dealers, even if the CPS cannot prove it, so what do you expect. The little morons are most likely pedaling the drugs for them, and thats why they were not pursued.

As for the police, like there ever going to admit one of there own was in the wrong.
