MUSEUM bosses have insisted that some of York’s best loved gardens are open to visitors of all ages after security guards wrongly barred entry to teenagers.

The York Museums Trust, which runs the Yorkshire Museum and Gardens, said youngsters were briefly banned from the Museum Gardens after graffiti was discovered, but the guards had not been given permission to take such action.

A spokesman said that action had been taken to ensure such a ban was not enforced again.

The trust’s comments came after a woman contacted The Press to complain about the ban, which she witnessed on the afternoon of Saturday, July 12.

She said she saw guards turning away any young people trying to enter the gardens from Museum Street unless they were accompanied by an adult.

She said that those banned were not smoking or carrying drink, and it appeared that a new discriminatory policy was in place against young people.

The trust spokesman said security guards in Museum Gardens had prevented unaccompanied teenagers going into the garden for about half an hour on that day after a spate of graffiti had been discovered.

“This was not an instruction from the museum and was stopped as soon as the manager on duty became became aware of the situation,” he said.

“York Museums Trust has spoken to the security firm to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”

He stressed: “The Museum Gardens are open to all, no matter how old they are, and this remains the case.”

The Press has reported previously how the gardens have suffered from graffiti problems.

Last year, the gardens, along with public building elsewhere in the city, were blighted by graffiti tags which were costing up to £1,000 a week to remove.

Earlier this month, we reported how a replica masterpiece on display at the Hospitium in the gardens, the Arnolfini Portrait, by Jan van Eyck, had been taken.

The painting was one of 49 full life-size recreations of paintings from the National Gallery and York Art Gallery which have been hung at prominent points around the city to transform it into a free, al fresco gallery for the summer.

I thought the appeal of the place was on the wane now there is a strong cider ban in force.

We've had these security firms denying access before, i.e. on the Knavesmire when the caravan clowns were around. I think they need to make a public apology and be made to understand that they obey instructions and don't get creative.

It is not the age of persons using the gardens that is the problem, it is their behaviour. The Press is quite right to highlight this problem. Some people (not necessarily drinkers) are a disgrace to the city and should have their pictures put in the paper as a warning to other yobs.

I haven't noticed a ban on cider drinking, playing ball games or cycling - all things which are supposed to be prohibited in the Gardens. Perhaps the security guards should concentrate on these. Also, why on earth have all the litter bins been removed? The place looks like a sh*t tip after a sunny afternoon of chavs discarding beer cans and MacDonald's rubbish everywhere.

I asked about the removal of the litterbins and was told the following, the contractors responsible for cleaning the gardens were not happy about removing the black bags out of the litterbins in case there was glass etc which could have cut their leg etc!
So, they removed all the bins rather than face a claim!
As a result the gardens look like a sh*t hole, those people that do have a bit of pride were taking there rubbish away and placing in the council bins at the entrance on Musuem St,alas, those bins obviously got very full very quickly,a council roadsweeper was so incenced by this he went and got 2 huge wheelie bins and chained them to the fence outside the gardens for people to place rubbish in.
Result?
No...the Museum Gardens bosses complained to his bosses saying that the bins were ugly and looked out of place near the enterance!
Result...bins were taken away from the front which will now result in piles of litter waiting for removal!
What do they want?
2 huge bins serving a purpose and obviously solving a problem they created or piles of rubbish which was there doing?

"Also, why on earth have all the litter bins been removed?" - they've all been moved to Kings Square! I think there are 6 in a very small area!
