Many happy returns for York charity

A YORK charity celebrated its 20th birthday with a party for volunteers and staff members.

York Wheels is a registered charity and was set up in 1988 to provide transport services for the benefit of the community.

The service is aimed at people who have mobility problems, either through age or disability that cannot afford other modes of transport.

The charity runs a volunteer car driver scheme where customers can book a car in advance to collect them and take them to their destination. The charge made covers the out of pocket expenses of the volunteers plus an administration charge.

York Wheels also owns two minibuses, which can be hired out at an hourly rate.

York Wheels currently has 38 volunteers who work for the organisation from one to six days a week each.

York Wheels Ltd is managed by a committee with representatives from City of York Council, staff, volunteers and customers so that all sections of the organisation can bring their experience to bear.

The party, held at The Marcia, in Bishopthorpe, York, was attended by the Lord Mayor of York and the Sheriff.

Coun Ruth Potter, chair of trustees at York Wheels, said: “This is a great day for us. We are celebrating the success of a remarkable organisation that has many remarkable volunteers. We have invited all the people who were involved in setting up York Wheels and all our volunteers. It’s a really good way of saying thank you to them."
