TWO very young “newly-weds” and a girl whose life was saved by air ambulance are inviting friends to join them at a charity ball.
Charlotte Leighton, 12, of Tollerton, nearly died after being hit by a car outside her home in March 2006. She was airlifted to hospital by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA) where she underwent lifesaving surgey at Leeds General Infirmary.
Charlotte, who attends Easingwold School, was also treated with groundbreaking sonic welding equipment to help rebuild her face as reported in The Press at the time.
Her mother, Sue, said Charlotte owes her life to YAA and has now fully recovered and living a happy, normal life.
To show her gratitude, Charlotte is encouraging other youngsters to attend the children’s ball in the Officers’ Mess at RAF Linton-on-Ouse, near York, on August 9.
Two other children who will be dressing up to the nines for the ball are “newly-weds” Francesca Foxcroft and Tom Mewes.
Six-year-old Francesca, and Tom, seven, acted as the bride and groom during a marriage ceremony at The Forest Of Galtres School, near York. Part of a Celebration Of Faith week, it was designed to teach pupils how the marital big day is planned – and there was even a wedding cake for all to share.
The organiser of the children’s ball is Francesca’s mum, Katy, of Newton-on-Ouse. She said: “The Dress To Impress Children’s Charity Fancy Dress Ball has evolved into one of the largest children’s charity functions ever held in this area. We have secured help from many local companies who have offered their services free of charge. The setting is very grand and it should be a fabulous night to remember for local children and their families.”
Among the many treats on offer are limousine rides, a party food box and magic by Boxo the clown. As well as the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, the event will also raise funds for SSAFA – Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association).
Mrs Foxcroft said: “Charlotte’s story is one of the driving forces behind the ball. Before her accident many of us were unaware that YAA relies solely on the generosity of individuals and organisations to help save lives across Yorkshire.
“Charlotte and her family now work tirelessly fundraising for YAA and Sue is a key member of our fancy dress ball committee.”
Tickets to the ball are priced at £15. There is no charge for accompanying adults or children under three years of age. For more details, phone 01347 847352 or visit www.charityfancydressball.co.uk
