A CRAZY end to the opening day at Trent Bridge left Yorkshire in trouble against Nottinghamshire.

An amazing nine wickets tumbled after tea in the LV County Championship division one clash, with first Notts and then the Tykes on the receiving end.

Nottinghamshire’s first innings dissolved thanks to a crazy 18-ball spell in which they collapsed from 212-6 to 213 all out.

The visitors looked to be in a terrific position after that flurry of wickets but, unfortunately, the mayhem did not end there.

By the close, Yorkshire had slumped to 72-5, and they will go into today’s second day 141 runs behind.

Mark Ealham’s dismissal began the home side’s dramatic collapse.

The former England all-rounder was caught at second slip off Adil Rashid by a sharp Jacques Rudolph, the South African skippering the side in the absence of hamstring injury victim Anthony McGrath.

Then Tim Bresnan struck to have Chris Read, who made 142 in the reverse fixture at Headingley, caught behind for 19.

After Paul Franks was run out, Charlie Shreck was last man out thanks to a superbly athletic silly point catch by the diving Adam Lyth.

Earlier, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan had done the majority of the damage with the ball, as he took three scalps.

The most important was that of Matthew Wood, a man who has a massive score of 297 to his name in a previous game against Yorkshire.

Wood was unable to build on a well-crafted half-century as Naved nipped a ball back into him and induced an edge to wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy.

Yorkshire’s reply got off to the worst possible start when they were reduced to 18-2 after Chris Taylor’s duck was followed by Joe Sayers’ nine.

Sayers was only in the side after travelling down from the second team game at Stamford Bridge to replace McGrath.

Unfortunately, he spent much more time getting to Trent Bridge than he did at the crease after he was dismissed in under half an hour.

Rudolph and Lyth then put on 50 before the South African went lbw to Ealham for 19 and, after Lyth’s resistance ended for 22, Andrew Gale came and went for four and Yorkshire had slumped from 68-2 to 72-5.

At the close, Brophy was partnered by Matthew Hoggard with neither having got off the mark.
